An enormous snake was recently sighted by a hiker at Florence’s Jeffries Creek Park.
If Indiana Jones had seen this, he would most certainly have turned around quickly.
Meredith Langley shared her encounter with what appeared to be a snake-like object in a Facebook post she shared with the South Carolina Hiking club.
Langley noted how perfectly the snake blended in with its natural habitat.
In her post, Langley wrote: “This was a good teaching opportunity and example for my own kids who forget not to run ahead of me on trails!”
A brown water snake (Nerodia genus), which is not deadly, was identified as such by Greg Lucas, a biologist with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
Due to their thick, muscular bodies, the water snakes Lucas described may appear larger than they actually are. According to him, water snakes typically reach between 30 and 60 inches in length.
Langley mentioned encountering copperhead snakes on their weekly hikes in the area. She added that water snakes and water moccasins are common in the region.
According to Langley’s estimates, the snake she encountered was at least four feet long when fully extended. She noted that the creature showed no fear towards them.
“It observed me with calmness and reserve, without any signs of aggression or fear. This indicated to me that the creature knew it could defend itself if necessary, but it saw no need to waste energy,” Langley said.
She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to witness the creature and then respectfully left the area.
“That area is its home, not ours, and my children and I always maintain that respect and reverence whenever we are out in nature,” Langley said.
