MLB Player’s Brief T-Shirt Message Spurs Controversy

Note: This story, originally reported in March 2021, is being republished.

Manny Machado, the San Diego Padres third baseman, has frequently found himself at the center of controversy, facing criticism from fellow MLB players, both publicly and privately.

This week, he stirred up controversy once again by appearing at Padres Spring Training wearing a shirt bearing the phrase “Let’s Go Brandon,” a well-known derogatory remark directed towards President Joe Biden.

When images of Machado wearing the shirt surfaced online, social media users were quick to react.

One commenter expressed approval, saying, “Love to see it.”

Another remarked, “Shut up and hit the baseball! Remember, no politics in sports, THEY say!”

A third commenter jokingly wrote, “Nice Shirt! Lol at the snowflakes melting down over this.”

Questions were raised about the apparent contradiction of mixing politics with sports, with one person asking, “What happened to keeping politics out of sports?”

Yet another comment read, “Even Machado knows what’s up! #LetsGoBrandon #slamdiego.”

Despite widespread complaints about political involvement in sports, it seems unlikely that the combination will disappear anytime soon.
