Justine Van Den Borne, a woman living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), recently shared a photo of a harsh note she found on her car after parking in a disabled bay at Mitcham Shopping Centre in Melbourne, Australia. The note read, “Did you forget your wheelchair???” and was left on her windshield.
In response, Van Den Borne took to Facebook, posting a heartfelt message alongside the image. She explained her condition and her right to use the disabled parking facility, expressing frustration at being judged on her good days. She highlighted that disabilities aren’t always visible and cautioned against making assumptions. Her post went viral, garnering over 17,500 likes and thousands of shares.
Van Den Borne, diagnosed with MS at 35, often uses a walking stick and anticipates needing a wheelchair in the coming years. MS affects the brain and spinal cord, causing symptoms like vision loss, muscle stiffness, balance issues, and fatigue. Her type, secondary progressive MS, involves worsening symptoms over time.
Unfortunately, Van Den Borne’s experience isn’t uncommon. She explained to The Age that due to her age and unseen disabilities, she often faces suspicion and criticism. She emphasized the need for understanding and highlighted the challenges faced by many with invisible disabilities.
Multiple Sclerosis has no cure. Liz Sayce, CEO of Disability Rights UK, commented on the incident, noting societal suspicion toward those with non-visible disabilities. She urged empathy and understanding, emphasizing that many disabled individuals, not just wheelchair users, require accommodations and deserve respect.
