Handler Denies Little Girl’s Request To Pet Service Dog, Mother Expresses Disappointment

This story, originally in the news in December 2018, has resurfaced as a video depicting an incident involving an upset mother and a service dog handler gained significant attention online.

The video shows the mother asking the handler if her 2-year-old daughter could pet the dog. The handler, Megan, and her colleague politely declined, explaining that service dogs are trained to remain undistracted, and petting could disrupt their work.

According to reports, the woman returned in a rage, shouting at Megan and her colleagues due to their refusal. Megan decided to record the encounter, which further angered the woman. The video has since been widely shared on social media, viewed nearly 4 million times.

In her defense, the mother argued, “That was very rude the way she spoke to me. There should have been a sign, and she could have said something like ‘Sorry, the dog is in training’ instead of just saying ‘no’.”

Megan clarified that her service dog’s vest clearly states “Please do not pet me I’m working,” with additional warnings on both sides of the vest. She also noted that harassing a service dog is illegal.
