Man Discovers 5 Young Animals Under Old Mattress, Later Realizes Their True Identity

Note: This story is a republished account originally reported in April 2017.

A routine day of waste clearing in an English garden led to an unexpected rescue mission. Craig Mcgettrick and his coworker stumbled upon an old mattress while at work, uncovering five tiny creatures they initially thought were puppies. However, their discovery soon became a tale of mistaken identity and a touching reunion.

Uncertain whether the creatures were puppies or kittens, Mcgettrick decided to take action. He carefully placed them into a cardboard box and headed to an animal rescue center, seeking advice and assistance by posting photos on Facebook.

These photos caught the attention of Martin Hemmington, the founder of the National Fox Welfare Society, after inquiries from Beccie, who suspected the animals might actually be fox cubs. It turned out that these innocent cubs had been mistakenly taken to a rescue center, thinking they were dogs.

Local rescuer Paul McDonald, known as The Fox Man, explained that fox cubs can resemble dog puppies initially due to their color, distinct from adult foxes. The cubs’ mother had likely used the discarded mattress as a den.

With McDonald’s help, the cubs were retrieved from the rescue center and returned to the spot where they were found. McDonald ensured the cubs cried out for their mother, and after a suspenseful wait, she returned to collect each cub safely.

By 7 o’clock that evening, all cubs had been joyfully reunited with their mother, marking a heartwarming success story for all involved.

This resolution left Mcgettrick, Hemmington, and McDonald overjoyed. It was not just a rescue but a reunion that allowed nature to follow its course, described by McDonald as “the best kind of rescue.”

In a world full of heartwarming stories, this one stands as a testament to compassion, understanding, and the remarkable bond between a mother and her young.
