Officer Rescues ‘Baby’ From Hot Car, Discovers Huge Mistake

Note: This story originally made headlines in August 2016.

A police officer in New Hampshire broke into a car to rescue what appeared to be a baby locked inside, only to discover it was a lifelike doll.

Lt. Jason Short of the Keene Police Department responded to a call at a Wal-Mart on July 23 about a baby locked in a car in the parking lot, as reported by WMUR.

Concerned due to the hot weather, Short acted swiftly upon seeing what looked like feet under a blanket inside the car. He decided to break the window to rescue the supposed infant.

After breaking in and removing the blanket, Short initially thought the child was unresponsive. He performed rescue breathing, but the doll did not respond as expected, leading him to realize it was a realistic doll designed to resemble a baby, with a non-functional mouth. He canceled the ambulance call.

The owner of the doll, Carolynne Seiffert, was located at a nearby salon, Super Cuts, during the incident. She explained to the officer that the doll, named Ainslie, was crafted to look incredibly lifelike. Short noted that even when he picked it up, the doll felt remarkably real.

According to Sentinel Source, Seiffert had recently purchased Ainslie for $2,300 from a doll nursery. Ainslie is a type of doll known as a “reborn” doll, meticulously handcrafted from silicone to simulate the appearance of a real baby. Seiffert is an enthusiast with a collection of these lifelike dolls.

In response to the misunderstanding, Seiffert plans to affix a sticker on her car to alert others that the babies inside are not real.
