Legendary Actor Bob Newhart Passes Away at 94

On Thursday, it was announced that the acclaimed actor Bob Newhart has passed away at the age of 94. The sad news was shared by his publicist.

Newhart, a cherished figure in the entertainment world, died on July 18th, according to reports. The Illinois native was well-known for his roles in classic productions such as the Christmas favorite Elf and the popular TV show The Big Bang Theory.

Details about the cause of Newhart’s death have not yet been disclosed. His publicist, Jerry Digney, mentioned that the actor’s passing came “after a series of short illnesses.”

Fans and fellow entertainers have begun to honor Newhart’s memory, with many taking to social media to express their condolences. One tribute read, “Rest in Peace Legend,” while another noted, “You will be greatly missed Bob Newhart. Rest in Peace.” A third tribute stated, “One of the funniest guys who ever lived.”

Newhart’s long and successful career spanned various entertainment forms, from his stand-up comedy beginnings to his memorable roles on television and in film. Originally working as an accountant and advertising copywriter in Chicago, Newhart discovered his talent for comedy and was introduced to Warner Bros Records in 1959 by radio DJ Dan Sorkin.

His debut comedy album, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart, released in 1960, achieved remarkable success by reaching number one on the Billboard charts and winning two Grammy Awards. Newhart went on to star in two popular CBS sitcoms, The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart, which cemented his status as a beloved actor.

In 1970, Newhart began his film career with a role in Catch-22 and continued to build his resume with various roles, including a notable appearance as “Papa Elf” in the 2003 film Elf. Newhart described this role as his favorite, expressing that it was the most fulfilling part he had ever played.

He also made a significant impact on television as Professor Proton on The Big Bang Theory from 2013 to 2018, a role that earned him a Primetime Emmy Award.

Newhart was married to Virginia “Ginny” Quinn from 1963 until her passing in 2023. He is survived by their four children—Robert Jr., Timothy, Courtney, and Jennifer—and ten grandchildren.
