Tipping, a long-standing tradition in the United States, has recently sparked intense debate. As servers and hospitality workers across the country depend on tips for their income, one individual’s outspoken declaration on social media has ignited a conversation challenging the current norms.
Dustin Anderson, known as @therealdustinanderson on TikTok, has taken a bold stance against conventional tipping culture, drawing significant attention. In a viral video, he firmly states, “So, I’m not tipping anymore – I’m done, I’m out.” In a society where tipping is customary, his comments bring to light issues that many patrons have silently questioned.
Dustin argues straightforwardly: Tipping used to reward exceptional service, but he questions when he last received such service. He argues that tasks like delivering food or drinks are basic responsibilities and shouldn’t automatically warrant a 25% tip. He asserts, “You don’t get 25 percent because you did your job.”
Responses to Dustin’s video have been mixed. Supporters agree with his viewpoint, highlighting situations where tipping seems unnecessary. One commenter expressed frustration, stating, “I ordered carryout at Pizza Hut and the tip options started at 18%. I drove there, went in, picked up. What am I tipping for?” Another supporter, an ER nurse, echoed this sentiment, saying, “I don’t get tipped for being an ER nurse and saving lives!! So yeah, I’m done too.”
However, not everyone agrees with Dustin. Some argue that the low minimum wage for servers in the U.S. necessitates tipping to make ends meet. A commenter pointed out, “People forget that waitstaff often earn less than minimum wage.” Another server shared concerns, saying, “I understand the frustration, but as a server making $3.13 an hour, tipping is essential for us.”
