In a charming park in Gwinnett County, Leslie Howe and her family recently came across a creature that seemed like it belonged in a science fiction film. Thankfully, their decision to observe rather than touch kept them safe from any danger.
Howe recounted her surprise, saying, “It was like nothing I’d ever seen before. It resembled a mix between a rodent and a caterpillar.” With her baby secure in her arms, she instinctively grabbed her phone to record the unusual sight.
Unbeknownst to her, the creature she was filming was a venomous puss caterpillar. Her children, intrigued, moved closer to get a better view.
Reflecting on the experience, Howe noted, “It could have been very painful for one of them — especially the baby. I was unsure about the potential harm.”
The puss caterpillar gets its name from its fur-like, cat-like appearance. However, hidden beneath this seemingly harmless exterior are tiny, venomous spines capable of delivering a painful sting comparable to that of a wasp or a jellyfish.
Dr. Nancy Hinkle, an entomologist at the University of Georgia, provided her expert perspective: “The pain often throbs and can sometimes travel up the limb.” She stressed the importance of keeping a safe distance from these creatures, clearly advising, “Avoid touching them.”
Although puss caterpillars are typically found in treetops in the Southeastern United States, recent encounters in states such as Texas and Florida have prompted increased awareness. In North Carolina, a child’s interaction with a puss caterpillar resulted in a visit to the doctor.
Dr. Hinkle recommended using scotch tape to remove any spines embedded in the skin and applying ice to ease the pain. In rare cases, a puss caterpillar sting may cause more severe symptoms like sweating and nausea, potentially requiring medical attention.
Leslie Howe and her family’s encounter with the puss caterpillar turned out to be one of fascination rather than distress. Their experience highlights the incredible diversity of nature and underscores the importance of observing wildlife safely and carefully.
