Note: We are reintroducing this story, which initially made headlines in March 2023.
In a deeply tragic event, a family from Oklahoma City is mourning the loss of their twin toddlers, a boy and a girl, who drowned in their family pool. The incident occurred when their great-grandmother, who was struggling with Alzheimer’s disease, accidentally left a back door ajar, which led to the heartbreaking accident.
On a Thursday morning, 37-year-old Jenny Callazzo, who is a stay-at-home mother and runs a boutique, made the horrifying discovery of her 18-month-old twins, Locklyn and Loreli, at the bottom of the pool. Despite immediate rescue efforts, both children were declared dead approximately two hours later, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Jenny lives with her grandmother, her six children, and her husband Sonny, a 42-year-old marketing executive, in a $565,000 home. A family member told the Daily Mail that the great-grandmother’s mistake in leaving the back door open allowed the twins to wander outside, resulting in the tragic incident.
Aerial views of the property showed a pool with a greenish tint, covered in algae, highlighting the potential dangers. The police are currently investigating the case but have not found any evidence of foul play related to the twins’ deaths.
In the days leading up to the tragedy, Jenny had posted pictures of her children playing outside, reflecting their joyful lives before the accident. Neighborhood residents recalled the heartbreaking scene of the twins’ mother being taken away in an EMS vehicle while paramedics attempted to revive her children.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family cover the unforeseen expenses associated with their loss. The campaign underscores the community’s effort to offer support and solace during this painful time.
Laura Gamino, an injury prevention coordinator at OU Health, has emphasized the critical dangers that water poses to young children. She urges parents to be vigilant, noting that drowning can happen very quickly and silently, especially with toddlers who may not know how to get out of water. Gamino recommends installing 4-foot-high fences with secure gates around pools as a preventive measure.
As the community grieves the loss of Locklyn and Loreli, this incident highlights the urgent need for water safety awareness. By promoting education and implementing safety measures, we can work to prevent such tragedies in the future. It is a somber reminder of the importance of being vigilant in protecting our loved ones.
In light of this tragedy, the community is encouraged to focus on water safety education and take proactive steps to secure home pools to avoid future accidents. Together, as parents, neighbors, and citizens, we can strive to prevent such devastating events and ensure the safety of our children.
