In an unexpected turn of events, a resident of Back Hill found herself under police protection following the discovery of an unexploded bomb hidden within an old fruit tree in her garden.
A specialist was called to remove a decaying apple tree from Christine Battersby’s property. Upon cutting into the trunk, a surprising find emerged – a hand grenade. The specialist promptly informed the authorities, leading to a swift response from the police.
Mrs. Battersby recounted the incident, highlighting the specialist’s composed reaction and the rapid arrival of law enforcement. The ancient tree, possibly part of a historic orchard, had been dead for years, prompting its removal. The deliberate placement of the grenade raised intriguing questions about its origin.
Glen Conway from Haddenham was nearing the end of the tree removal when he discovered the unexploded bomb in a hollow at the tree’s base. The police quickly cordoned off the area, advising the public to avoid the vicinity or stay indoors.
Experts from Colchester’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit were dispatched to handle the situation. As a precaution, sandbags were placed around the tree overnight before the grenade was safely disposed of the following morning.
The discovery led to police protection for the night to prevent anyone from attempting to retrieve the potential wartime relic. A police spokesperson expressed gratitude to Jewsons, Ely, for providing materials to secure the area. The EOD Regiment, a specialized division of the British Army’s Royal Logistic Corps, played a crucial role in managing the bomb.
Established after World War II, the EOD Regiment is responsible for counter-terrorist disposal and the safe handling of conventional munitions. Positioned across the UK, the regiment ensures a rapid response to support law enforcement.
In addition to their national duties, the EOD Regiment provides bomb disposal teams in Afghanistan and oversees the storage and use of military explosives.
This incident highlights the lasting impact of historical events and the importance of specialized units in addressing unforeseen dangers and ensuring community safety.
