Shala Holm’s remarkable experience with a giant snapping turtle during her family trip to Niemeyer’s Rugged River Resort has captivated many online. The striking photo she took reveals the turtle’s prehistoric-looking head and outstretched limbs with intimidating claws reaching for a fish basket.
While Holm and her daughter were enjoying a peaceful crappie fishing session in a tandem kayak on the Mississippi River, an unusual event occurred. Her daughter’s sharp hearing picked up an odd sound, prompting Holm to look toward the riverbank. To her surprise, a giant snapping turtle emerged from the water, intrigued by the fish basket hanging beside their kayak.
Startled by the unexpected visitor, Holm quickly lifted the basket, causing the turtle to swim away. The following day, driven by curiosity, Holm and her daughter returned to the same location. The large reptile reappeared, allowing Holm to capture a few close-up shots.
Though the precise dimensions of the turtle are unknown, Holm estimates its front legs were as thick as her wrists. She suspects it was a snapping turtle, Minnesota’s largest turtle species. Adult snapping turtles typically range from 8 to 14 inches in length and weigh between 10 to 35 pounds, though some can reach up to 65 pounds.
Holm shared her impressive photo with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), who estimated the turtle’s age at a minimum of 15 years, possibly up to 30. Sheila Niemeyer, co-owner of the resort, posted the photo on their Facebook page, and it quickly went viral, receiving nearly 1,000 comments, thousands of shares, and media coverage.
The reaction was mixed: while some marveled at the sight, others joked about being cautious in waters that might be home to such creatures. Despite their formidable appearance, snapping turtles are not dangerous. Erica Hoaglund, a wildlife specialist from the Minnesota DNR, assured the public that snapping turtles usually avoid humans and are not a threat.
These turtles are essential for maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems by consuming decaying organic material. However, they face challenges such as habitat loss and vehicle collisions.
Despite the thrilling encounter, Holm is eager to return next summer for another chance to see the magnificent turtle. Her story continues to fascinate and inspire, highlighting the marvels of the natural world.
